Whimsical accessory is trending alongside lavish lace dresses
Wedding gown trends come and go almost as fast as the wedding day itself. We asked Timothy Devlin, director of operations at Bridal Trousseau, a couture bridal boutique in New Haven, about this year’s trends and must-have gowns. He shared with us everything to know about necklines, finishing touches and everyone’s favorite fabric — lace.
What are the trends you’re seeing for spring and the year ahead?
Bridal Trousseau has been open since 2002 and we have seen so many trends change and evolve over the years. Over the past few seasons, brides have especially been looking for different necklines. It used to be that the majority of brides were looking for strapless but now they seem to want anything but that.
A lot of designers are taking notice of this and offering different styles with illusion necklines, convertible straps, and long sleeves. Maggie Sottero’s “Verina” has such great detail and gives a great alternative to strapless styles.

Another major trend that I don’t think will ever change is lace! I would say that more than half our clientele come in looking for lace. Matthew Christopher has mastered the fit-and-flare style and his gown “Elizabeth” (right) has that classic style with a unique lace-pattern overlay.
At Bridal Trousseau we absolutely love color and it is so exciting to see our designers offering gowns in an array of shades that are not traditional white and ivory. This spring we have a multi-layered gown in the shade of “moonstone” arriving from Marisa Bridal. This stunning gown has us really excited for the future of bridal and we can’t wait to see what trends are coming next.
How important are accessories?
Accessories are an extremely important part of the process. We have our brides schedule a whole appointment just for the selection of these finishing touches. Many brides will add sashes to the waistline of their gowns to add some extra sparkle to a simple gown. It is very important when accessorizing your gown to make sure that all the pieces tell the same story — I love mixing and matching pieces but they should all still correlate with one another.
What are some popular accessories for spring?
Accessories in bridal are ever-changing — even more than gown styles! The biggest trends we are seeing right now are in headpieces: there are so many alternatives to the headband/headpiece look. Sara Gabriel’s “Matty” (right) is one of our favorite pieces and really creates a “wow” moment on your special day.
Another major trend in bridal accessories is the white opal crystal element. Haute Bride offers their pieces in over 20 Swarovski stone colors and white opal has definitely become the most popular. We also this set created by Haute Bride for our brides here at Bridal Trousseau that includes a custom sash, earrings and bracelet.
